چکیده

According to the ‘phonological deficit hypothesis’, problems in reading and spelling in dyslexic persons are due to poor representations of sounds in long term memory. As a result, the acquisition of the grapheme-phoneme correspondence and word decoding is assumed to be difficult. In this paper we describe a perception experiment to find evidence for poor phonological representations in 9-13 year old pupils who perform poorly in reading. The experiment is a twoalternative forced choice task in which subjects had to identify an intervocalic consonant in clean and noisy conditions. The results support the phonological deficit hypothesis but do not provide unique cues for the precise manifestation of this deficit. Between normal and poor readers, significant differences have been found with respect to reaction times, but not to accuracy.

Tracking orthographic learning in children with different profiles of reading difficulty

Previous studies have found that children with reading difficulties need more exposures to acquire the representations needed to support fluent reading than typically developing readers (e.g., Ehri and Saltmarsh, 1995). Building on existing orthographic learning paradigms, we report on an investigation of orthographic learning in poor readers using a new learning task tracking both the accuracy...

Quick, automatic, and general activation of orthographic and phonological representations in young readers.

Second through 6th graders were presented with nonword primes (orthographic, pseudohomophone, and control) and target words displayed for durations (30 and 60 ms) that were brief enough to prevent complete processing. Word reading skills were assessed by 3 word and nonword naming tasks. Good readers exhibited more orthographic priming than poor readers at both durations and more pseudohomophone...

Individual Differences and Lexical Learning: Links to memory for faces, things, and words

The Lexical Quality Hypothesis (Perfetti & Hart, 2002) suggests that the difficulties exhibited by poor readers cascade from deficient (impoverished, fuzzy) representations of phonological, semantic, and orthographic dimensions in lexical memory. If so, readers, even as adults, should vary in their ability to acquire new lexical representations. In our study, we examine the role of cross-modal ...

Phonological instability in young adult poor readers

Phonology is held to play a central role in typical reading development (Shankweiler et al., 1979) and sensory or phonological deficits are often held to be a primary cause of reading disability (Snowling, 2008). However, little is known about the nature of phonology at the endpoint of atypical reading development -that is, in adult poor readers. We examined the time course of (auditory) lexica...

Relation between Phonological Processing, Auditory Processing and Speech Perception among Bilingual Poor Readers

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES A deficit in phonological processing abilities has been hypothesized as a cause of reading deficits among poor readers, but the precise etiology of this deficit is still unknown. Many studies have investigated the relation of auditory processing and speech perception with phonological processing, while the relation between these are not well understood. Thus, the prese...
